St. Lawrence Seaway Welcomes New Board Member

Cornwall, Ontario (February 4, 2014) – The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) is pleased to announce that Gerald Carter has been appointed to its Board for a three-year term. He replaces Ralph Mercier as the representative for the Québec Provincial Government.
Gerald Carter comes to the Seaway with a long history in marine transportation . He is a past President of Canada Steamship Lines Inc. (CSL), a major player in the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence Seaway system. Mr. Carter joined CSL in the early 1990s as Director of Information Systems. This appointment was followed by a series of progressively more responsible roles, leading to his nomination as President, a position he held from 2002 to 2012.
During his time with CSL, Mr. Carter also served on various boards and committees of maritime-based organizations, including the Canadian Shipowners Association and the Chamber of Marine Commerce.
Terence Bowles, President and CEO of the SLSMC, welcomed the appointment of Mr. Carter. “Gerry Carter’s vast experience and expertise in the marine industry will be a valuable addition to the Seaway Board”, said Mr. Bowles.
The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation is a private, not-for-profit corporation, created pursuant to the Canada Marine Act, to operate and maintain the Canadian locks and channels of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Since its inception in 1959, over 2.75 billion tonnes of cargo has been transported via the waterway. Some 227,000 jobs and $34 billion in economic activity are supported by the movement of goods within the Great Lakes / Seaway waterway.
