Seaway Announces Winners of the Marine Transport High School Essay Contest

CORNWALL, July 12, 2004 – The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation recently announced the winners of its Marine Transport High School Essay Contest.
Within the English division, awards were granted to Alex Comolli (recipient of the $3,000 1st prize, Gananoque Secondary School, Gananoque, Ontario), Eva Baginska (recipient of the $1,500 2nd prize, St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, Brampton, Ontario) and David Spense (recipient of the $1,000 3rd prize, St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, Cornwall, Ontario).
Within the French division, awards were granted to Vincent Roy-Bérubé (recipient of the $3,000 1st prize, Polyvalente Manikoutai, Sept-Iles, Québec), Alyssa Morin (recipient of the $1,500 2nd prize, Ecole La Frontalière, Coaticook, Québec) and Claudine Proulx (recipient of the $1,000 3rd prize, Ecole secondaire Barthélemy-Joliette, Joliette, Québec).
The essay contest, which was open to Grade 12 students in Ontario and Grade 11 students in Quebec, challenged students in the Spring of 2004 to submit a 1,500 word essay focusing on the role that marine transportation plays in Canada. The students were recognized for their achievements in highlighting the advantages of marine transport, its environmental benefits, and its future potential.
An independent committee comprised of 3 marine and language experts judged the essays and determined the winners. Across Ontario and Quebec, students from some 50 high schools participated in the competition.
The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation operates 13 locks between Montreal and Lake Erie. Over 40 million tonnes of cargo transits its locks annually, including grain, iron ore, steel and specialty cargoes.
