Jim Athanasiou stepped into the role of President and CEO of the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) in July 2024, where he leads the Canadian portion of the bi-national Seaway system.
Since joining SLSMC in 2008, Mr. Athanasiou has spearheaded impactful initiatives, such as the Seaway’s $100 million Modernization Program. This program introduced hands-free vessel mooring and remote operations, representing the most significant advancements to Seaway infrastructure since its inception in the 1950s.
In 2016, he was promoted to Vice-President of Engineering and Technology, overseeing Engineering, Infrastructure, Business Improvement, IT, and Strategic Planning. Just prior to taking on the role of President and CEO, he led the SLSMC in securing a 20-year Management, Operation and Maintenance Agreement with the Federal Government, ensuring long-term stability and growth.
After graduating from Concordia University in Montreal with a Bachelor of Engineering, Mr. Athanasiou worked for Domtar Corporation, a North American pulp and paper company. Along with his Engineering Degree, he obtained an Executive Masters in Business Administration from McGill University-HEC Montréal. He is a Member of the Québec Order of Engineers
