#8 – July 26, 2002 – Condition and Handling of Mooring Wires

July 26, 2002

Mariners are advised that the condition and handling of mooring wires is critical for a safe and efficient transit of the Seaway:

  • Mooring wires are to be free of barbs. Damaged/frayed mooring wires are to be replaced as they can lead to potential injury to both lock and ship’s crew.
  • Due care must be exercised to ensure that a “back lash” of the mooring wires does not occur on the winch drums.
